At a time when the impact of the fashion industry on the environment is a major issue, we wanted to highlight an innovative material that we mainly use in our collection of down jackets and bomber jackets.
What is Sorona?
Sorona is a synthetic fiber created by DuPont de Nemours, Inc. in collaboration with Genomatica, a biotechnology company. Its composition is based on 1,3-propanediol acid, a compound derived from corn, combined with terephthalic acid. This combination results in a renewable and biodegradable polyester fiber. It offers an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic fibers such as petroleum-derived polyester.

Ecological Benefits
1. Renewable Sustainability
Sorona reduces dependence on non-renewable resources by using corn, a renewable crop. As a result, it reduces the carbon footprint associated with the production of synthetic fibers.
Additionally, Sorona is UV resistant, meaning the colors last much longer, extending the life of the fabrics.
2. Biodegradability
Unlike conventional polyester, which can take hundreds of years to decompose, Sorona is biodegradable. It offers a more environmentally friendly end-of-life solution.
3. Performance
Sorona doesn't sacrifice performance for durability. It offers the same strength, softness, and elasticity as traditional polyester, and even better performance.
Unlike elastane, Sorona® has a very short drying time. It does not wrinkle or pill.
4. Reduction of Plastic Waste
By promoting the use of biodegradable fibers, Sorona helps reduce plastic waste in oceans and landfills, offering a concrete solution to the global plastic pollution crisis.
Applications and Impact
Sorona is used in various products, including clothing, carpets, and industrial textiles.
Its adoption in the fashion industry is a testament to its potential to transform the entire sector toward more sustainable practices. By promoting eco-friendly fashion, the Sorona inspires brands and consumers to make responsible choices.
That's why our design team has opted for this material for all of our down jackets, as well as for several leather jackets in our latest Fall 2023 collection.
To identify these products, you will find a red label sewn into the lining of the jacket (see photo).

In conclusion, Sorona represents a revolution in the textile industry, offering an ecological and high-performance alternative to traditional synthetic fibers.
By integrating Sorona into our products and practices, we are helping to preserve our planet while promoting responsible fashion.
